AFRICA’S ONLY GREEN SHIP RECYCLING COMPANY
Africa’s only Green Ship Recycling Company. 34South is a Development Company in partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Ltd (IDC)
“34South’s vision is to be the Internationally preferred EU accredited Green Ship Recycling Facility”
– Frost & Sullivan 2021
The proposed new Ship Recycling Facility along the West Coast of South Africa will be the first such facility in the entire African region to meet the standards prescribed by the European Commission (EC). The 34South facility is expected to become the first Green, Compliant, Ship Recycling Centre in Africa.
34South highlights the potential of a Ship Recycling Facility in the region, especially on account of concerns around the industry in India and other Asian countries. Incidentally, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan makes up nearly 90% of the world’s ship recycling market.
The European region lacks plus 10,000 LDT facilities, thus making it necessary for ships to be shifted to Asian destinations for recycling. The lower costs in South Africa compared to Europe, makes it a preferred destination for ship recycling operations. Also, ship owners could save thousands of kilometres by sending their ships to South Africa, rather than sending them to Asian destinations for recycling. The proposed facility will have capacity to process vessels up to 18,000 LDT.
34South is in partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa. The IDC’s role is to enhance the industrial capability of South Africa, and the rest of the African continent, thereby boosting economic growth and industrial development. The IDC has supported 34South in completing a comprehensive Bankable Feasibility Study of its proposed Green Ship Recycling Facility in Saldanha Bay.
