Green ship recycling is the environmentally responsible approach to decommissioning and breaking down an old ship into its recyclable components and dispose of any non-recyclable parts in an approved manner. Such “green” ship breaking methods reduces the amount of unmanaged waste and also keeps the toxic materials from entering the natural environment, such as beaches, thereby significantly reducing its impact on the environment.

The Bamaka Convention is similar to the Basel Convention and intends to prohibit the export of hazardous waste to Africa. South Africa is however not a signatory to the convention and has therefore also not ratified the convention.

For the facility to be approved on the EU list it needs to be operational. This facility will be operation in 2024.
